As you age, your risk for ocular disease increases significantly. The American Optometric Association strongly recommends an annual comprehensive eye exam for every person age 40 and older. This evaluation is critical for early detection of eye problems. Our comprehensive eye exam includes pupil dilation and diagnostic testing that enables our doctors to check for signs of glaucoma, macular degeneration, and other health concerns.
Glaucoma is a disease affecting the optic nerve that can lead to permanently impaired vision. It is one of the leading causes of blindness in the United States and can occur at any age, with few or no symptoms in its early stages. Glaucoma can be hereditary but it has also been linked to diabetes, nutrition, eye injuries, eye surgeries and steroid use. Symptoms may include blurred vision, eye pain, dilated pupils and redness of the eye, severe headaches or the appearance of “halos” around light sources.
To test for glaucoma our doctors examine the optic nerve, conduct pressure tests and measure a patient’s field of vision. Every patient is individually assessed and a schedule is designed to monitor eye health and coordinate a comprehensive treatment plan.
Here at The Eyecare Boutique we believe that our patients deserve the best optical and fashion have to offer. As a certified Hoya Technology Center, we use only the highest quality ophthalmic lenses. Diabetes can affect the health of your eyes and lead to vision loss and even blindness if not controlled properly. Early detection is critical in preserving good vision.
Three important steps to maintaining your vision when you are diabetic:
1. Maintain average blood glucose (A1C) levels in line with recommendations established by the American Diabetes
Association and the medical professionals managing your diabetes.
2. Work closely with your doctors to maintain your blood pressure and weight.
3. Schedule a Diabetic Eye Exam annually.
The first two steps are in your hands. We’re here to offer regular diabetic eye exams which include dilation and digital retinal imaging to fully monitor your eye health. Our team can help you establish a schedule to responsibly monitor and maintain your vision with diabetes

The sum of your immediate and peripheral vision constitutes your field of vision, which makes up the world you perceive. A visual fields test is conducted to detect loss of vision across this field. The test requires patients to alternately cover each eye and watch for spots of light to appear in a controlled environment.
Visual Field testing may be conducted for diabetic patients, patients with macular degeneration, glaucoma, eye injuries and a variety of eye related problems.
New technologies have made it possible for doctors to digitally photograph the retina at the back of the eye. This valuable tool lets us track changes in your eye health and detect problems early on to ensure the most effective methods of treatment for each patient. Retinal photography is especially important for managing glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy.
